1965 was the year Atlanta falcons joined the national football league, since then they grew to be one of the best teams in the game with a record of 298 – 402 but still they only had one super bowl appearance at super bowl XXXIII.

The falcons got their name on June 1965 and a school teacher describes this name best . she said “the Falcon is proud and dignified, with great courage and fight. It never drops its prey. It is deadly and has a great sporting tradition.” ( taken from wikipedia).

up until the 2008 season you could say that the falcons was an average team. but all that changed when they signed mike smith to be the head coach and he decided to draft the third choice rookie Matt Ryan. with him came Michael Turner and everything changed from that time on. from 2008 til now the falcons have had only wining seasons and established themselves as one of the best football teams in the league. ironically the only super bowl appearance they had was back in 1998 when they had the best wining record of 14-2 but they lost the game to the Denver broncos.

Division championships : 1980, 1998, 2004, and 2010 with super bowl appearance in 1998
